Paradip: At least 20 people were injured in a clash between the irate company labourers and security personnel of Essar Steel India’s Paradeep plant site on Friday.
The clash erupted when the labourers were agitating in front of the factory, alleging that the security personnel of the company set ablaze the temporary rest sheds used by around 40 laboureres of the company for a long time, inside the plant premises.
Hundreds of aggreived labourers attacked the plant officials and assaulted the security personnel besides ransacking two company vehicles and security guard camp office.
Following attack by the labourers, security persons of the plant retaliated to chase away the agitators using lathis. In return, the agitators retaliated pelting stones.
“None of these agitators are recognised labourers nor holders of any authorised identity cards of the company. We are yet to ascertain the motive behind the attack. We have no involvement in burning down of temporary rest sheds, said P K Gupta, Project Director of Essar Steel.
Adding more Gupta said, since the plant officials had been asking the labourers to demolish the structure for the last 2-3 months, the labourers suspected it was the handiwork of the company and went on a rampage.
