Bhubaneswar: Expressing concern over the fate of workers, senior BJP leader Pradip Kumar Nayak on Monday urged the State Government to arrange bauxite for the Vedanta Aluminium Limited (VAL), which temporarily shut down its refinery at Lanjigarh in Kalahandi district on October 13, 2012, as it could not arrange for the minimum quantity of bauxite required to continue operations.
“The Shutdown of refinery at Lanjigarh has come as a blow to about 3,500 workers engaged in the plant as their livelihood is now at stake,” Nayak told.
Nayak even called for a legal action aginst VAL. “The closure of the refinery by Vedanta violates the Industrial Dispute (ID) Act, 1947,” Nayak said.
Adding more Nayak said, although, the company had informed the State Government on September 7 about shutting operations by December 5 due to shortage of bauxite, it shut down the refinery ahead of schedule on October 13 without intimationg the State Government. This is a clear violation of the ID Act and appropriate action should be taken against the company.
