Bhubaneswar: Former Judge of Odisha High Court Justice A. S Naidu, who is heading the judicial Commission of inquiry into the killing of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and the resulting communal flare that rocked Kandhamal district in 2008, has issued fresh notices to 55 people including former Rajya Sabha MP Radhakanta Nayak, former Kandhamal MP Nakul Nayak, former minister Padmanabha Behera, VHP leader Ashok Singhal, two former Directors General of Police Gopal Nanda and Manmohan Praharaj along with the then Home Secretary T K Mishra.
Apart from them, former Archbishop Raphael Cheenath, Christian leader John Dayal and Nikhil Kanodia, former SP of sensitive Kandhamal district have also been issued notices to appear before the Commission.
Earlier on Saturday, a fast track court in Odisha had sentenced 13 persons to six years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for their involvement in the 2008 Kandhamal riots.
It is noteworhty to mention that, Justice A S Naidu took over the judicial probe into the incident on October 1. The State Government appointed Justice AS Naidu to probe into the incident following the death of justice Sarat Chandra Mohapatra, who passed away on May 12, 2012.
The one-member Justice Mohapatra commission was appointed by the State Government on September 3, 2008, to inquire into the incident that had claimed around 100 lives and had rendered thousands homeless.
Out of the 706 affidavits received by the Commission, as many as 164 have been examined so far.
