Bhubaneswar: A man who allegedly indulged in extorting money by posing himself as a Maoist was arrested in Odisha’s naxal-affected Malkangiri district, police said today.

The accused, identified as Mohan Hantal (25) of Chitrakonda area in the naxal-hit district was handed over to the police by the villagers, while demanding money from the Sarpanch of Gunthagada Gram Panchayat.

As per the villagers, Hantal had been extorting money from various people in the village for quite sometime now. However, while examining his social background and past history, it was found that he has no link with the Maoists and just to make quick money, he presented himself as a Maoist, police sources said.

It is noteworthy to mention that there has been a rise in such incidents in the recent past in naxal-affected districts like Malkangiri, Koraput and Rayagada in southern Odisha, with unscrupulous elements trying to take advantage of the terror unleashed by Maoists.
