Bhubaneswar: Birla Tyres, a unit of the BK Birla Group company Kesoram Industries, Monday halted operations at its plant in Odisha temporarily for about a fortnight on account of poor market conditions, a company official said.

The factory in Balasore, about 200 km from here, will remain closed till Dec 31, because of the slump in the world tyre market, a senior plant official told IANS over phone on condition of anonymity.

The official said the company has stocks of nearly one lakh four-wheeler tyres, which it was unable to sell.

Set up to manufacture automobile tyres, tubes and flaps, Birla Tyres started commercial production in March 1992. He said the company has been halting operation at the plant for at least a week every month since May because of the slump in demand.
