Bhubaneswar: A group of students from Schools of Engineering of KIIT University have been selected to participate in the Society of Automotive Engineers’ (SAE) International’s prestigious ‘Aero Design West 2013’ competition to be held in California, USA from April 12–14, 2013.

The group of students have combined their efforts and have designed and built an aircraft has a combined length, width and height is 225 inches. The aircraft is powered by an internal combustion engine and can fly up to a height of one thousand feet, with a speed of 120 km/h. Made of Balsa wood, it weighs less than three and half kg and has the capacity to lift payload of around 10 kg.

The competition is divided into three classes; namely, Regular, Advanced and Micro. The students of KIIT University are participating in the Regular and Micro classes.

A team of 15 students known as ‘KIIT Arihant’ from mechanical, electrical, electronic and computer engineering streams of KIIT University is participating in the Regular class. Songshitobrota Kumar is captain of the team, which calls itself Arihant, while Rituraj Ranjan, Saurav Kalita, Saket Kumar, Sailav Panda, Rohit Manglik, Ruchir Prasoon Singh, S.Kumar, Sudipto Pathak, Tushar Singh, Dhananjay Kumar, Shubham Shekhar, Saurabh Pandey, Sanjeet Singh and Siddhant Prakash are the members.

The other team, which calls itself ‘KIIT Aero’, is competing in Micro class of the competition under the captainship of Shave Choudhury. Other members of the team are Varun Jhunjhunwala, Yash Agarwal, Vinamra Vinay, Dibyajyoti Das and Saswat Mishra. Their aircraft is powered by an electric motor and three axes gyroscope is used for better control and stabilization during the flight. Both the teams have worked under the active guidance of faculty advisor Prof. lsham Panigrahi.

The competition representing premier institutions from across the world, is designed to provide exposure to real-world situations that engineers face in their everyday work environment. The participating teams are required to design, fabricate and test radio controlled aircrafts. It encompasses both theoretical and practical aspects of aircraft construction. This gives students an opportunity to apply the knowledge they have learnt in their classroom to solve practical problems in aeronautical engineering.

This international competition is organized by SAE International in collaboration with organizations such as NASA and Lockheed Martin.
