Bhubaneswar: Polling for the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation election began Wednesday amidst tight security, an official said.

Electors could be seen reaching polling stations even before voting started at 8 a.m. The vote cast will continue till 5 p.m. The voters can cast votes after producing any of the documents like voter card, passport, driving licence, PAN card, ration card, ex-servicemen’s widow or dependent certificate and others.

An estimated of 6,90,239 voters shall exercise their franchise in 660 booths in as many as 67 wards.

Of the 660 booths, a total of 87 booths have been identified as sensitive and 375 booths as hypersensitive. Elaborate security arrangements have been made for free and fair elections. The State Election Commission (SEC) for the first time in the state has installed a web casting facility at 22 sensitive and hyper-sensitive polling stations to monitor the polling procedure and other activities in the booths live.

The Commissionerate police have deployed 35 platoons of police personnel, including 45 mobile police teams and four striking forces for free and fair conduct of polls.

Of the 394 candidates who are in fray, 186 are independent and others belong to different political parties. The ruling BJD has fielded candidates in all the 67 wards while the Congress has fielded candidates in 62 and BJP in 66 wards.
