Varanaseya Utkal Samaj in association with Odisha Sahitya Akademi organized one day seminar on “Odia Language, Literature and Contemporaneity” at K. N. Uduppa Auditorim, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi on 11th January, 2015. Dr. Prasanna Kumar Patasani, eminent poet and Member of Parliament, Odisha joined as chief guest and Prof. Girish Chandra Tripathi, Vice chancellor, BHU was the chairman in this seminar. Prof. T. M. Mohapatra, president, VUS welcomed the guest and Mr. Amiya Kr. Samal, Secretary, VUS informed about the objectives of the society to the delegates.

Dr. Patasani in his speech provided a gargantuan impetus to the praise worthy attempt of the Var naseya Utkal samaj for organizing this one day National seminar beyond the geographical limits of Odisha. During the course of his deliberation he emphasized on the fostering heritage of Odia literature, language and culture. Being a renowned litterateur and profound intellectual, he informed that the odia language has a treasure probe of three lakh words which is far more than any other language. He also cited it is a matter of dismay the language of English having a considerable no of words of ten thousand has able to rule India. The point he wanted to raise was the responsibility of Odia people for the development and propagation of the language. We just can’t afford the deterioration of our mother tongue and need to respect it. He also mentioned that every Odia seminar and conference should be held in purely Odishan terms without the influence of any language. Prof. Tripathi highlighted how the relationship between the different culture and language helps in the nation building. Mr. Bishnu Prasad Mishra, Secretary, Odisha Sahitya Akademy informed the different activities of the academy and role of the academy to promote and propagate odia language. Dr. Bijayanand Singh, President, Utkal Sahitya Samaj proposed the vote of thanks. Dr. Pradosh mishra and Ms. Supriya Mohanty hosted the programme.

Eminent Odia personalities Dr. Ramachandra Behera, Dr. Antaryami Mishra, Dr. Dinanath Pathy, Dr. Kirtan Narayan Padhi, Dr. Shankarlal Purohit, Dr. Bijayanand Singh, Mr. Sushanta Nayak, Dr. Jitendranath Mishra, Dr. Ramesh Chandra Panda, Dr. Guru Charan Behera, Dr. Gopabandhu Mishra, Dr. Bimal Kishore Panda, Dr. Gopabandhu Mohanty, and Dr. Binda Paranjape presented their paper on different aspects of Odia language.

In the discussion panel members suggested the importance to establish Odia Bhawan at Varanasi and Odia department at Banaras Hindu University. At the end there was cultural programme conducted by Dr. Swarna Khuntia with rhythm of Odia music. Ms. Supriya Mohanty, Ms. Mousmi Besan and Shri Saurav Panigrahi participated in the “Kabita Patha” session and Ms. Bilina Patra, Shri Asit Mishra, Shri Sarada Prasana Dash and his team performed in the musical session.
