Bhubaneswar: Special prayers and rituals were observed at places of religious significance across the state today on the occasion of Mahalaya.

Mahalaya Amavasya is considered as a highly auspicious day for performing rituals like ‘Shradh’ and ‘Tarpana’. According to a popular belief, the benefits of vows observed and rituals performed on Mahalaya Amavasya reach the forefathers of the performers.

Special offerings were offered to the departed souls like cooked rice, banana and black sesame seeds as a part of ‘Tarpana’ ritual.

It is believed that performing ‘Tarpana’ during the auspicious Mahalaya Paksha would bless the ancestors and will free them from all their sins.

The Bindusagar lake in the city saw a rush for the rituals since the pitru paksha concluded today and the Navaratri or nine-day festival starts tomorrow.

Bhubaneswar is also gearing up with its celebrations as hotels and cultural groups have started their festive programmes.

While most hotels are organising dandiya nites, pandals by local Puja samitis (organisations) are in the final stages of completion.
