Bhubaneswar: The 12th Toshali National Crafts Mela, kicked off at Janata Maidan, here on Friday.
This year, the state government has promoted the use of natural fibre while making handloom and handicrafts at the Mela.
A theme pavilion has been conceptualised on nature. The theme pavilion is erected centrally, which depicts various forms of natural fibres, used in the state in making crafts and fabrics.
The 13-day annual rural fair organised at the state capital serves as a platform for artists, painters, weavers, sculptors and craftsmen to exhibit their talents in front of a large audience. Craftsmen from all over India showcase their best collections here. People get an opportunity to interact with Nationally and Internationally acclaimed craftsmen and buy their collections.
This year, as many as 350 handicraft and handloom stalls have been put up. Sculptors from all corners of the state, have come up with their unique and elegant sculptures for interior decoration, cratsfmen with their brasswork utensils, Dhokra work artefacts, Pattachitra paintings, etc.
In addition as many as 30 stalls serving authentic Odia food have been put up that has added to the attraction of the whole event.
Besides the traditional handicrafts and the food, one can also enjoy traditional dance and music performance. Various eminent artistes and troupes from across country as well as the state in collaboration with Odisha Sangita Natak Akademi and state culture department are set to perform at the cultural events during the event. Noted Bollywood singer Javed Ali is also scheduled to perform on December 24.
The event is hosted by Odisha Tourism and is supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Development Commissioners of Handicrafts and Handlooms and the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre.
The Mela will continue till December 27.
