Bhubaneswar: Odissi dancers from across the country gathered here to display several aspects of the dance form in honour of legendary guru Pankaj Charan Das at the 24th edition of the three-day Guru Pankaj Utsav, that began at Rabindra Mandap here on Saturday.
Both young and veteran artistes are demonstrating their repertoire at the ongoing festival.
The Odissi festival also saw the presentation of the prestigious Mahari Award noted Odissi Danseuse Sanchita Bhattacharya.
The Mahari Award is one and exclusive award in the field of Odissi dance given to a dancer of national and international repute. It is instituted by Adi Guru of Odissi dance Late Pankaj Charan Das. The award carries cash prize of Rs. 50,000 a citation and memento.
Apart from this, Guru Niranjan Biswal of Bhubaneswar, Smt. Harapriya Swain of Bhubaneswar, Amrita Das of Burdwan, West Bengal and Guru Bijay Kumar Barik of Bhubaneswar, were felicitated with Binakara, Gauni Samprada, Sashimani Nachuni Samprada Samman and Madeli titles respectively for their outstanding contribution in the fields of Odissi music composition and direction, Odissi music, Odissi dance and Odissi Mardala respectively.
Dr. Ratna Roy was also conferred with the Adi Guru Pankaj Charan Das Parampara Sanman 2018, during the dance festival.
Roy is known as a bonafide disciple of Pankaj Charan and holds his legacy abroad.
She has earned many awards and honours from various countries for her Odissi skills.
