Bhubaneswar: The special ritual ‘Pahili Bhog Niti’ started at Puri Srimandir today on the occasion of Dhanu Sankranti. 

In view of the special rituals, the main door of the sanctum sanctorum was opened at 3 am today.

According to Hindu mythology, on this day, mother Yashoda cooks for Lord Jagannath, brother Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, the presiding deities of Puri, in the absence of goddess Laxmi, as she leaves for her parent’s place.

The rituals will continue till January 13, a day before ‘Makar Sankranti’.

During the month-long festivity, mahaprasad, the cooked offerings, becomes more attractive. There are additions of various mouth-watering  dishes to the menu list. Cakes made of blackgram and curd based preparations are also added to the menu during this  period.
