Bhubaneswar: The Snana Purnima rituals which marked as the beginning of the world famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra began at Puri under tight security.
As per the ritual, the temple servitors escorted the deities in ‘Dhadi Pahandi’ to the Snana Bedi, inside the Srimandir premises. Lord Sudarsan was the first to be escorted to the Snana Bedi followed by Lord Balabhadra, Lord Jagannath and Goddess Subhadra.
Traditionally, the deities were bathed with 108 pitchers of aromatic water by the servitors. The water would be drawn by Garabadu servitors from a well called ‘Sunakua’ situated inside the temple premises.
Held in the full-moon day of the month of Jyestha this festival is also simultaneously held in all other important shrines of Odisha. This day is considered to be the birthday of Lord Jagannath.
Odisha Police alloted 42 platoons of police force, three commandants, nine ASPs and 16 DSPs, one section of Special Tactical Unit (STU) and 224 officers for security at the Srimandir.
