Bhubaneswar: The Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha has witnessed a marginal increase in the number of saltwater crocodile nests this season.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the park Bimal Prasanna Acharya said the enumerators have spotted 103 nests of crocodile in Kanika, Rajnagar, Mahakalapada and Gahirmatha wildlife forest range divisions under the park.

Last year, 101 nests were spotted during the annual counting process.

Every year, between May 1 and July 31, the national park remains closed for the visitors due to the nesting season of the crocodiles.

Crocodiles mate between February and April and nesting takes place in May. A female crocodile, on an average, lays about 40 to 60 eggs in a nest.

Hatchlings emerge from the eggs after 80-90 days.
