Rama Devi was born on 3rd December 1899 at Cuttack. Her father Gopal Ballabh Das, was a District Magistrate. Though she had a luxurious life, she left all her comfort and jumped into the freedom struggle of nation. When she was 15, she was married to Gopabandu Choudhry, a District Collector and later a Freedom Fighter. Rama Devi participated actively in many movements like Salt Satyagraha, Khadi Movement, Bhoodan and Gramdaan movement and was sent to jail many times by the British Government. She didn’t lost her patience and fought till independence. She received the Jamanlal Bajaj Award in 1981 and was honoured with Doctor of Philosophy from Utkal University.
