Gopalpur on Sea is a beautiful beach located along the coastal line of Gopalpur in Ganjam district. It is said to be one of the foremost beach resorts in India. The coast of the beach is lined with casuarinas and palm trees which attracts a large number of tourists every year. Apart from this the deep turquoise blue water of the sea adds charm to the mood of swimmers, drifters and vacationers. The sand sculptures made on the sea beach also prove to be an added attraction for the visitors.
During the days of Kalingas it was known as the port of Paloura from which traders sailed as far as Java, Bali and Sumatra and piled up wealth dealing in silk and pearl. Later it was also a transit point to export sugar and cheap labourers for the tea gardens of Assam in north eastern India.
The beach has its own charm. The beach is a very quite and comparatively clean place to swim and sun bathe. Apart from this tourists hang out in the local markets dealing with items made up of sea shells. Moreover, one can find nearby hotels and restaurants preparing delicious cuisine of sea foods.
Goddess Kalua Shrine in Mahuri Kalua (30 kms), The shrine of Tara and Tarini at Taratarini (30 kms), the ruined fort and rock inscriptions at Jaguada (35 kms), Chillika lake (45 kms) and Taptapani (65 kms) are some of the other tourist places located very close to Gopalpur.
Gopalpur is connected via road to major cities of the State. National Highway No. 5 passes through it. The nearest railhead is Berhampur Railway Station (16 kms) and Biju Pattanaik Airport, Bhubaneswar (180 kms) is the nearest airport.
