Amathaguda is situated in the district of Kalahandi near the bank of Tel river. It is an ancient ruined fort. The history of this fort is still unknown as the ruins of this place is not investigated yet. The fort has a strategic importance as it is found that the fort is situated in the bank of the river where the river is forded. There is an old bridge on the river which is now abandoned and a new bridge was built on the river, few meters away from the old bridge. During the high floods of 1977 in Tel river, some portion of the new bridge were washed away.

To reach Amathaguda, one has to reach Kalahandi first. Kalahandi is connected to all major cities and towns of Odisha by good motorable road and railway.
