History
The present district of Sambalpur came into existence on December 22, 1993.
Climate
The district enjoys an annual rainfall of 1,530 mm and has a maximum and minimum temperature of 47°C and 11.8°C, respectively.
Geographical Location
Sambalpur district lies between 20° 40′ N and 22° 11′ N latitude, 82° 39′ E and 85° 15′ E longitude with a total area of 6,702 sq. km. The district borders Deogarh district to the east, Bargarh and Jharsuguda districts to the west, Sundergarh district to the north, and Subarnapur and Angul districts to the south. The district has three distinctive physiographic units, such as the Hilly Terrain of Bamra and Kuchinda in the north, and the plateau and ridges of Rairakhol in the southeast.
How to reach there?
The city has two bus stands (Govt. and private) about 3 km from the city centre. The main Bus Terminal VSS Marg Bus stand is situated at Ainthapali, and the Private bus stand. The private stand has more regular services to major towns in the area. Regular buses go to Bhubaneswar, Puri, and Cuttack. Private-operated ‘Video Coaches’ also leave at night from Sambalpur’s main roads for Bhubaneswar and Raipur (in Chhattisgarh).
Sambalpur has two railway stations, the main Khetrajpur and the Sambalpur Road Station. The main station is about 3 km from the city centre, whereas the second one is a little closer and most trains also stop here.
