The Asha Kiran Society is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation (NGO) dedicated to the holistic development of marginalised tribal communities in the Koraput and Malkangiri districts of Odisha. Established in 1991 by a group of medical students, it opera tes out of Lamtaput, a remote block in Koraput, providing essential services where government infrastructure is often limited. The society's activities are diversified across four primary sectors to address the multifaceted needs of the tribal population: Healthcare (Asha Kiran Hospital): A 40-bed multi-specialty hospital providing affordable curative care to over 1.5 million people. Specialties: Includes General Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Dentistry, and Orthopaedics. Community Health: A team of 150 staff and over 120 volunteer community health workers reach 120+ villages, focusing on maternal health, palliative care, and disease prevention. Education (Asha Kiran Academy): Primary Education: Runs a private English-medium school for approximately 200 children. Multilingual Education (MLE): Operates centers that teach children in their native tribal languages (such as Bonda and Desiya) before transitioning to State languages and English. Farmer Training: Supports 160+ farmers across 34 villages in modern techniques like Sloping Agriculture Land Technology (SALT) and direct consumer marketing. Livestock: Works to improve local livestock breeds to enhance community sustenance and income.
