Dhamra Port

Dhamra Port, situated near Dhamra on the Bay of Bengal coast in Odisha’s Bhadrak District, serves as a significant maritime gateway for eastern India. Established through a 1998 agreement as a joint venture between Tata Steel and Larsen & Toubro, known as Dhamra Port Company Limited (DPCL), the facility welcomed its first vessel in 2010 and initiated commercial operations in 2011. While the port’s initial capacity was set at 25 million tonnes per year, there are plans to scale this up to 80 million tonnes.

The port transitioned to the management of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. in 2014. The port has become a primary export hub for iron ore from the region’s mineral belt. To support this, the Government of Odisha is developing the area into an industrial and logistics center, with projects including petrochemical industries, a shipbuilding yard, and a 500-acre airstrip. Infrastructure enhancements also involve urban development, improved road networks, and the expansion of inland water transport via National Waterway 5. Despite these advancements, the project has drawn environmental scrutiny due to the need to protect the endangered Olive Ridley Turtle.
