Similipal National Park

Similipal, a biosphere reserve, located in Mayurbhanj district of Orissa is widely acclaimed for its habitat for wild animals and plants. A tiger reserve is also present here since 1973 to protect the fast disappearing tigers. Besides Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve (Similipal-Kuldiha-Hadgarh Elephant Reserve) has been functioning here since 2001 to provide a safe habitat for pachyderms. .This plateau, with an average elevation of 900 meters, is a haven for biodiversity, hosting approximately 1,076 mammal species, 29 types of reptiles, and 231 species of birds. The environment is characterized by majestic Sal trees that stand like sentinels across the terrain. Welcoming visitors are the striking peaks of Khairiburu (1,178 meters) and Meghasani (1,158 meters), rising gracefully from the emerald heights. The atmosphere is permeated by the sweet fragrance of Champak flowers, while vibrant orchids nestled in the foliage provide a serene visual experience.

Known for its rich biodiversity Similipal is an ideal place for adventure tourism. It is also home to some exotic species of orchids. It attracts tourists round the year. Both the tiger reserve and elephant reserve are star attractions of Similipal. The sanctuary normally remains open to visitors from November to June.
