Taratarini Temple
This is one of the famous Shakti Peeths in our country. Here, the goddesses Tara and Tarini are worshipped as manifestations of Adi Shakti, drawing seekers of all faiths into their divine embrace. According to legend, the Shakti Peethas are sacred sites where the body parts of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Vishnu, in an effort to calm Lord Shiva’s grief during the Daksha Yajna, severed her body with his Sudarshan Chakra. It is believed that the Taratarini Temple marks the holy spot where Maa Sati’s breasts fell. This sacred site isn’t just a Shakti Peeth - it’s a spiritual confluence where Buddhist calm, Vaishnavite devotion, and Shakta power harmoniously unite. The energy here is both ancient and alive, radiating through the stone steps, the forested pathways, and the prayers of countless devotees.
The maa Taratarinini symbolizes nourishment, motherhood, and divine feminine power. This sacred Shakti Peeth is located near Purushottampur in the Ganjam district, on the banks of the Rushikulya River, about 28 kilometers from Berhampur city. A special significance of this place is that every year on Tuesdays of the month of Chaitra (second week of March to second week of April), special pujas are held here. It is famous as the Taratarini Mela. To reach this temple, one has to climb 999 steps, but now a beautiful road and a ropeway have been arranged to reach the temple. The environment here is peaceful, beautiful, and enchanting. This place attracts thousands of devotees, tourists, and visitors.
