Tampara Lake

Tampara Lake, located in the Ganjam district of Odisha, is one of the state's most important freshwater lakes. It was formed naturally when a low area of land was filled with rainwater from the nearby catchment. During British rule, it was called “Tamp,” which later became “Tampara” in the local language. Today, the lake is well-known not only for its beauty but also for its ecological importance. Tampara Lake also supports the local economy. Every year, it produces about 12 tonnes of fish, which helps many families earn a living. It also provides water for farming and household use, making it an important resource for nearby villages. In recent years, the lake has become a popular tourist spot, attracting visitors with its calm waters, natural beauty, and rich birdlife.
