Gahiramatha

Located in the Kendrapara district of Odisha, Gahiramatha is a world-renowned ecological marvel that serves as a vital natural boundary between the Bhitarkanika Mangroves and the Bay of Bengal. This pristine coastal stretch is globally celebrated as the most important nesting ground for Olive Ridley sea turtles, hosting the world’s largest known rookery. As part of the Gahiramatha Marine Wildlife Sanctuary, the area encompasses both the shoreline and the adjacent marine waters, providing a protected haven for these ancient mariners.

While other significant nesting sites exist at the mouths of the Devi and Rushikulya rivers, Gahiramatha remains the primary theater for the spectacular Arribada—a mass congregation where thousands of turtles arrive simultaneously for mating and nesting. This breathtaking natural phenomenon continues to enthrall scientists and nature lovers from across the globe, solidifying Gahiramatha's status as a crown jewel of India’s marine biodiversity.
