National Institute of Technology Rourkela

The National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT Rourkela) is a top public institute for engineering, science, and technology in Rourkela, Odisha. The then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru laid its foundation on 15 August 1961, establishing the Regional Engineering College on 650 acres of land provided by the then Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik. NIT Rourkela gained autonomy in 2002 and currently functions independently under the Ministry of Education. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs, and NIRF ranked it 13th among Indian engineering universities in 2025.
